Defendants begin case in popcorn company lawsuit

Jurors get two days off this weekend to rest up for another week of testimony in the latest lawsuit involving respiratory ailments affecting Jasper Popcorn Company workers.
The ninth day of Kenneth and Alisha Moenning's lawsuit was the second day in which the lawyers for defendants International Flavors and Fragrances, Inc., and Bush Boake Allen presented evidence.
The Moennings' attorney rested their case Thursday morning. At that point, the defense asked for a directed verdict in its favor, but that motion was overruled by Judge William Carl Crawford.
Moenning, 37, is one of more than a dozen who have sued the companies alleging that chemicals used in flavoring at the plant have caused them to have serious and in some cases life threatening respiratory illnesses. So far, the companies have lost all but one case.
The case is scheduled to last four weeks, according to court records.
