Sarcoxie man found guilty of shooting stepdaughter

A Sarcoxie man who impregnated his stepdaughter then shot her was found guilty by a St. Clair County Ill., jury Thursday.
William M. Camplin, 50, faces up to 60 years in prison, according to an article in the Belleville, Ill., News-Democrat.
According to the story, Camplin was charged with statutory rape in Jasper County, but posted bond on June 2, 1999. Three weeks later, he showed up in Illinois looking for his 17-year-old stepdaughter. Court records indicate he had sex with his daughter at least three times,beginning when she was only 15.
He found the girl in a mobile court trailer, living with the friend who had helped her escape from her stepfather. He entered the trailer and shot the friend. The girl ran, tried to get help from a neighbor, but Camplin caught up with her and shot her five times. Both the friend and the girl survived, and according to the News-Democrat article are now married to each other.
Camplin's sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 9.
