Interesting take on Monett rural firefighter incident

A letter in today's Springfield News-Leader offers a unique way of looking at the recent incident in which Monett rural firefighters stood by as a building belonging to Bivaldo Rueda burned to the ground.
Would the police department stand by and watch a crime being committed?

Police departments are funded differently than rural fire fighters.

This is not even the first structure that burned this way in that county in the last 12 months, why is this one getting allt he press?

i have a question for those who say "well, that's what he gets for not paying his dues." Forget dues and budgets and bureaucracy for a minute. where is the human kindness that tells us we should help people in need? the man could have had a heart attack or been badly hurt. we ozarkers have a long tradition of helping our neighbors when they're in trouble. where was that quality among those who stood and watched this man's belongings burn?

Amen! They may come out okay by the law but in their hearts and in the hearts of their neighbors, they are no longer respected. We respect our firefighters because we know they will do right by us in our time of need. When something like this happens people will lose respect for them. It is a sad thing for that group to lose the communities respect.
I really hope that not all firefighters would act that way, I can't even imagine a firefighter not wanting to fight a fire, that is what they do, it boggles the mind.
