Former cop/school board member asks for delay in sentencing in sex case

Former Carthage R-9 Board of Education member and CPD officer Michael Lloyd Wells is asking to delay his sentencing on deviate sexual assault charges.
According to Jasper County Circuit Court records, Wells is scheduled to be sentenced Friday in Judge Jon Dermott's court. Wells' lawyer, Charles Rhoades, Neosho, filed an application last week for extension of time for sentencing and a continuance.
Wells pleaded guilty May 12, three days before he was scheduled to go to trial. Under a plea agreement, his charges were reduced from forcible rape, sexual assault, and two counts of incest to deviate sexual assault, a Class C felony. The crime took place Sept 1, 1994, and April 1, 2001, according to court records.
At the plea hearing, Judge Dermott ordered a presentencing investigation, which was due Friday.
