Article explores dangers of GateHouse IPO

GateHouse Media, owner of the Carthage Press, Neosho Daily News, Joplin Daily, and the Big Nickel, will go public this week, and some experts are questioning the wisdom of that strategy at a time when newspaper circulation and revenues are down across the United States.
The problems are examined in this article from the Dow Jones News Wire.

Dangers? Really?

Kids shooting guns at school are dangers. Drunk drivers are dangers. Hardee's Thick Burgers are dangers. An IPO? I don't think so. The worst thing that could happen is for a bunch of rich white men to not make a fortune.

And I doubt the local reporters are in a position to benefit financially from this.

"The worst thing that could happen is for a bunch of rich white men to not make a fortune." Exactly, dumbass... the IPO is a danger to these people's pockets. The headline makes perfect sense.

The danger is to the reporters and editors who will lose their jobs and the communities who will lose their newspapers and management becomes obsessed with "making the quarter" and improving value for shareholders.
