Columnist: Foley can look forward to book deal

Syndicated columnist Cal Thomas hits the nail on the head with his description of what might lie ahead for former Rep. Mark Foley:

Scandal? Disgrace? I think not. Foley and others could only be so labeled if popular culture condemned, rather than promoted, immorality. Oh, sorry, there I go again, appealing to a discarded standard.

We do laugh at honor and as a result we do find traitors in our midst. We also mock conventions and then are surprised when some take us seriously and respond as if there are none. Congressman Foley can look forward to talk show fame and a lucrative book deal. Welcome to America, 2006!


A touch cynical? Perhaps, but consider that Foley has taken the first step that many of our scoundrels in politics and entertainment have taken by checking himself into rehab for a heretofore unknown alcoholism problem. That has been the first step for many media celebrities as they attempt to rehabilitate their tattered images.

I think Foley should claim an addiction to oxycontin as well. Seems to have worked out well for Limbaugh. Then the pages who egged on Foley could be blamed for getting the oxycontin for Foley.
I think Bill Clinton could be worked in somewhere along the line just to make sure where the real and proper blame can be directed.
