Gurman: from the Missouri Legislature to roller derby

What I always enjoyed the most about journalism was the variety.
I have written in the past about a certain day in 1992 in which I covered Vice President Dan Quayle's visit to Carthage Junior High School, a Webb City Council meeting, and the Carthage High School volleyball team's opening-round match in the district volleyball tournament.

But when it comes to variety, you can't beat what former Joplin Globe intern Sadie Gurman has gone through during the past year. A few months ago, Miss Gurman was serving as the Globe's statehouse reporter, covering the almost inexplicable game of politics.

Now a reporter for the Rockford Register Star in Illinois, in today's edition Miss Gurman takes a crack at another inexplicable game, the venerable sport of roller derby.

Roller derby is not the only inexplicable sport the versatile Miss Gurman has covered for the Register Star. Last week, she tackled the world of cockfighting.

Shows how high the Globe's standards are compared to other papers.

Yeah Gurman's reporting about cockfighting and roller derbies -- she's also reporting for a 90,000 circulation paper that's located in one of the biggest markets in the country. That's a big fricking step up from the Joplin Globe.

Her work hasn't been just these topics. But wouldn't you rather write about interesting things as opposed to following Gary Nodler and Ed Emery around? I sure would.

I wasn't meaning to disparage Miss Gurman's work. She is doing a great job. Those were just unusual stories and stood out.

I was referring to the previous poster...not you Randy. Although I think he/she might have been making a sarcastic comment about the Globe.

Sorry about that.

No problem.

YES! Miss Gurman's work is an example of how versitile a journalist needs to be as the world is endless in news. What may seem unimportant to one person is another's 15 minutes of fame. What's important is that EVERYTHING is important and her ability to convey anything in that manner is a compliment to her work. In some respects, cockfights or government...what's the difference? LOL. Congratulations to her for her continued success.
