Ice storm waiver bill handed to tourism committee

You might expect that Rep. B. J. Marsh's bill to allow school districts to waive days missed during the recent ice storm would be handed to the House Education Committee, but that's not the case.
According to the House website, the bill will be heard in the Tourism Committee, which is headed by the Springfield Republican.
HB 678's 29 co-sponsors include five Joplin-area representatives, Ron Richard, R-Joplin, Marilyn Ruestman, R-Joplin, Kevin Wilson, R-Neosho, Bryan Stevenson, R-Webb City; and Ed Emery, R-Lamar.
No date has been set for a committee hearing.

This bill greatly affects tourism - why shouldn't people whose livihoods depend on tourism have a say in this? It's not like someone is taking away the number of school days each year. Students and teachers will get the same amount of time and any teacher who cares about actually educating students should see no problem with this...it's a week in the spring or a week in the fall...bottom line is that it's still the same...probably better because of environmental conditions.

Tourist employees have rights and expectation as well as anyone else. Sorry, Randy, you're looking for a fight where there is none.

I hate to think some tourist from Iowa wandering around the Ozarks has some influence on the education of our children. Its only the almightly dollar this hoggish tourism industry is after. Its the same way with all the hoopla for the Veterans. If you are so interested in doing something for the Veterans, then make it all FREE. Its the wallet Stupid!

It's just not the family from Iowa that is targeted by the tourism industry. This bill mostly affects children and families from the immediate area. They do not want to lose any ground when it comes to fleecing their own neighbors and friends.
