Nodler bill targets independent candidates
The full text of SB 409 has not been posted on the Missouri Senate website, but it appears Sen. Gary Nodler, R-Joplin, was more than slightly irritated that he had to spend a little bit of his massive campaign war chest fending off a challenge from independent candidate Kim Wright in 2006.
According to the bill's summary, SB 409 would require "independent candidates in general elections to file a written declaration of intent to run for statewide office, Congress, the state Senate, state House of Representatives or Circuit Judge."
The bill had its second reading Feb. 1 and will be heard before the Senate Financial & Governmental Organizations and Elections Committee. The chairman of that committee is Sen. Delbert Scott, R-Lowery City.
Ms. Wright's decision to file as an independent came after the deadline for filing as a Democrat, Republican, or Libertarian.
