Former MSSC star, Broncos work out deal

For the moment at least, it appears the most famous alumni of Missouri Southern State University, Denver Broncos wide receiver Rod Smith, will remain a member of that team.
Today's Denver Post reports Smith and the Broncos agreed to a restructuring of his contract to enable him to remain on the team...at least for the time being:

The Broncos and Rod Smith have agreed to a stop-gap restructuring of his contract that ensures the team will not cut him at this time. Smith, however, still could decide to walk away from the deal.

The move saves the Broncos significant cap room as Smith's salary is reduced to $1.5 million in each of the next two seasons.

Smith, 37, has played on two Super Bowl championships during his career, all of which has been spent with the Broncos.

Probably anybody who read any of the more than 1,000 Sports Talk columns I wrote between 1984 and 1999 for the Lamar Democrat and The Carthage Press.

If they reduce his salary so much, it could really impact his ability to pay on all of his child support cases.

Rod also has a new enterprise: Your Travel Biz (YTB). He had a meeting at the Joplin Ramada Inn on Friday evening.

The MSSU basketball coach is also involved with Smith's travel business. Both are preparing for life after sports.
