Neosho Daily captures eight awards at APME

The Neosho Daily News had its best showing ever at the annual Associated Press Managing Editors awards, capturing eight awards, including first, second, and third for the second straight year in the spot news category.
As noted in an earlier post, the Joplin Globe accomplished the same feat in the category for medium-sized newspapers, and both publications took first place with coverage of the Nov. 27 Anderson Guest House fire, in which 11 people died. Todd Higdon and Wes Franklin provided the coverage for the Daily.

The Daily's second place award. in that category went to Higdon and John Ford for "Camping Trip Cut Short." Ball's column in today's edition does not tell what that story was about, but I am guessing it has to do with coverage of cult sex scandal involving the Grand Valley Baptist Church and Rev. Raymond Lambert and family's trip to an Oklahoma campground. Third place went to Ball for "Anderson Stands Still."

The Daily's other awards came in the following categories:

-First and second in spot sports to Sports Editor Cody Thorn with first place going to his coverage of Seneca wrestling
-Second place to Thorn in sports feature writing
-First and third place in headline writing to Ford

In his column, Ball noted:

What I am most pleased with is that every person of our news staff was honored in some way. These awards prove not only that our editorial staff members can write well, but shows they are dedicated to their job. While we don't write every story thinking we may win awards, it is refreshing to receive accolades, especially from our peers.
