Public will not foot the bill for Lindstedt trial

Martin Lindstedt did not want a public defender and thanks to a court ruling he will not have to have one.
Newton County Circuit Court records indicate Judge Greg Stremel ruled Dec. 28 that Lindstedt, a perennial candidate for positions ranging from East Newton R-6 Board of Education to governor, is ineligible for a public defender because he has assets that are worth enough to cover his defense.
Lindstedt is charged with committing statutory sodomy in 2003 and has been in jail for nearly three years. A hearing will be scheduled in the case when Lindstedt finishes court-ordered psychological evaluation.
