Thompson still in race, gets free publicity from MSNBC

Fred Thompson found a great way to get free publicity for his campaign.
MSNBC carried nearly all of his speech to supporters in Columbia, S. C., expecting Thompson to drop out of the race, and possibly endorse Sen. John McCain.

It didn't happen.

Thompson delivered a smooth, strong speech to an enthusiastic crowd (and to all of MSNBC's viewers), but did not drop out of the campaign, despite a poor finish in the South Carolina primary. At the moment, with 13 percent of the vote in, Thompson is in third place at 15 percent, just one percent ahead of Mitt Romney.
The race for first place is too close to call, with McCain continuing to hold the lead with 34 percent of the vote, and Mike Huckabee close behind with 30 percent.
