Legislator drug testing bill referred to committee

A bill sponsored by Rep. Kevin Wilson, R-Neosho, which would require Missouri legislators to undergo random drug tests, has been referred to the Special Committee on General Laws.
The committee chairman is Rep. Tim Jones, R-Eureka. Rep. Steve Hunter, R-Joplin, serves on the panel.
HB 2342 would also require random drug testing for those applying for assistance for needy families.

Drug testing has gone way too far in the USA and while I can appreciate the irony of subjecting legislators to the same laws they so blithely pass to keep us all safe from ourselves, I can't quite laugh it off.

Trying to find a job - in liberal San Francisco, yet - I ran into a listing from a magazine seeking copywriters, proofreaders and layout artists. I requested further info and was informed all prospective hires would have mandatory drug tests.

I can support the idea that there perhaps ought to be some controls in place to safeguard us from drunk or drugged bus drivers, air traffic controllers, and so forth. But when a writer job won't consider an applicant unless s/he submits a pee-cup along with the writing sample, I can only shake my head in utter dismay.

So now we have a system doing its best to deprive a drug user of legitimate employment. They think it will make people stop using drugs? Maybe a few. The rest will be working illegitimately or even criminally. People have always taken drugs and likely always will. And the drug users have to eat, too.
