Messenger headed to St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Springfield News-Leader Editorial Page Editor Tony Messenger is leaving the newspaper to cover state news for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

Messenger, who was hired by the Tribune in 1999 as a city editor and eventually became a full-time columnist, is currently the editorial page editor of the Springfield News-Leader. He said he will start his position at the Post-Dispatch’s Jefferson City bureau on March 24.

Messenger said his hiring at the Post-Dispatch fulfills a desire to work at a major metropolitan newspaper.

"I think it’s a great opportunity to do what I do best and focus on state politics and state government and do some good reporting," Messenger said.

Messenger gained attention last year when he wrote columns exploring controversy about e-mail retention practices in Gov. Matt Blunt’s office, as well as the firing of the deputy general counsel Scott Eckersley.

Randy,

I Don Wyatt fired Messenger. Do you know? Have you heard anything more than what's in your post?

Isn't it weird that the Columbia Tribune broke this as opposed to the News-Leader or the Post-Dispatch?

Just wondering.

Jeff -

Don Wyatt didn't fire anybody. Think about it: A guy gets fired, and then turns around and finds a job with the biggest paper in the state, AND is allowed to work for two more weeks?!? I don't think so. When someone is fired, they are kicked out the door immediately.

Messenger jumped ship just like dozens of others during Wyatt's tortuous four years at the SNL.
