Governor obsessed with gay marriage

Gov. Matt Blunt continues to be obsessed with the subject of gay marriage.

Over the past several days, he attacked Attorney General Jay Nixon for not backing other attorneys general in fighting the recent decision of the California Supreme Court. Then he attacked Nixon for joining the battle too late.

In his weekly column, Gov. Blunt again touches on his favorite subject:

Missourians made their voices heard in 2004 by defining marriage as between one man and one woman in our state’s constitution. I believe, as do the majority of Missourians, that marriage is between one man and one woman and that we must protect traditional marriage. It is imperative that we stand up and defend the institution of marriage when it is attacked.

I was extremely disappointed that the California Supreme Court has thwarted the will of the people in their state by allowing same-sex marriage in their state. This is just the latest example of judges legislating from the bench and it reinforces the need for a constitutional protection at the highest level. We are standing on a precipice where judges are attempting to unravel traditional values without any regard for the views and values of the people.

It is also disappointing that the California Supreme Court would not delay their decision on same-sex marriage until after the voters of California decide again on this issue in the November election. The delay was requested on May 31, by attorneys general in Alaska, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Michigan, Nebraska, New Hampshire, South Carolina, South Dakota and Utah.

Anyone who believes that traditional marriage is not under assault in our country needs only to look at the actions of the California Supreme Court. Their decisions reinforce the need to protect traditional marriage with an amendment to the U.S. Constitution. If we do not define marriage as between one man and one woman then judges will define it for us as the California Supreme Court has done.

The latest news from California is yet another clear indication of the need to protect traditional marriage within the United States Constitution. As I have said before, I urge all members of Missouri’s Congressional delegation to support an amendment to protect traditional marriage.

I believe in traditional marriage and in 2004 stood with the majority of Missourians to protect traditional marriage by defining marriage as between one man and one woman in our state’s constitution.

While the governor has every right to take a stance on any issue, and no doubt, many Missourians agree with his position on this issue, the simple fact is it has nothing whatsoever to do with the issues that are facing the state right now.

Missouri would be far better served if our lame duck governor was concentrating his efforts on the economy, health care, and other issues that genuinely affect the people he has elected to serve. Perhaps this would be an excellent time to use some of the energy he has spent writing and speaking about a non-existent problem to address his administration's continuing violations of the Sunshine Law.

Hopefully, this obsession with out-of-state and national issues is an effort to distract Missourians from the governor's problems...and not an effort to position himself as a strong, young conservative who could be a fit as John McCain's running mate.

After all, how much taxpayer money would it cost to transport Matt Blunt between Washington and Springfield three or four times a week?

There will always be people against equality. Marriage is a basic civil right that should be attainable by all Americans if they choose. For those who are uncomfortable with gay marriage check out our short produced to educate & defuse the controversy. It has a way of opening closed minds & provides some sanity on the issue: www.OUTTAKEonline.com

Charlotte thanks for sharing that with us.

In 1914 the voters of Missouri defeated giving women the vote. It was called harmful to society.

In our not to distant past, mixed marriages were illegal and referred to as harmful to society.

Same gender marriage will come to the same conclusion as these two issues of the past.

Democracy and Equality will always prevail. It just takes Democracy a bit to figure it out.

Just let the homosexuals marry each other. Hey, they need to have the right to lose everything they have in divorce courts just like the rest of us do.

What, did someone pat Matt Blunt on the fanny and tell him he's cute or something? With a quagmire in Iraq, an economy going to hell in a bucket, huge corporations laying off thousands of people and gas hitting $5 a gallon on the West Coast, and nearly $4 right here in Missourah, we have a lot more important issues to worry about than gay marriage.

Matt Blunt is the very definition of the old saying "the squeaky wheel is the one that wants to get greased."

Rumor has it that Mr. Blunt is being investigated by many, including CNN and Newsweek for an affair he has had with a prominent Spirngfield business man who is also a well known gay man. Allegedly the story is to break "within the month"
