Cards win! Perez shuts down Dodgers in ninth

It's just one game, but a Cardinal reliever managed to get through the ninth inning with no problems (just one walk), as St. Louis beat the Dodgers 9-6 to keep pace with the Cubs and Brewers.

The save was the first for rookie Chris Perez, who pitched the eighth and ninth innings, but longtime Cardinal fans will remember when a rookie named Todd Worrell became the Cardinal closer in August, replacing Whitey Herzog's bullpen by committee with Jeff Lahti, Ken Dayley and Bill Campbell.

Perez was called up today from the minor leagues.
