Globe filled with news of Girard Press, nothing about CNHI furloughs

Furloughs were supposedly announced today at all CNHI newspapers, according to a post on the Sports Journalist message board.

Those posting on the site said all CNHI employees have to take the furloughs, except for those involved in retail advertising sales. CNHI, of course, owns the Joplin Globe.

The Globe, meanwhile, continued its blanket coverage of the economic crisis, including the problems facing newspapers, as long, of course, as the newspaper in question is not the Joplin Globe.

The Globe placed an article on its website today revealing that the Girard Press, owned by Gatehouse Media, will publish its final edition March 25.

Hopefully, those posting on the message board were wrong about the furloughs being companywide.

Anyone with more information can e-mail me at rturner229@hotmail.com or respond to this post.

Employees at another paper owned by CNHI in Kentucky were told on Thursday to take one week off.

I work at a CNHI daily... we were told the same thing on Thursday. I tipped off The Birmingham News in Birmingham, Ala. CNHI is headquartered there, and is an investment of the retirement system for public employees in Alabama. Should be some public record somewhere. Just tired of taking their blame. I know our newsroom works our butts off... and our hands are tied. We literally can't do more than what we do.

But CNHI doesn't care. Good journalism doesn't make the list of their top priorities.
