May 15 competency hearing set for Memorial Middle School shooter

A 9 a.m. May 15 hearing will be held in Jasper County Circuit Court to determine if Memorial Middle School shooter Thomas Gregory White, 16, is competent to stand trial.

Doctors who examined White have concluded that he is "permanently" unfit to stand trial.

White is charged with two counts of assault, and single counts of armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, and attempted escape. The shooting incident took place in October 2006. White has been held since that time as public defenders have tried unsuccessfully to reverse the court ruling that White will be tried as an adult.

Are you ready to consider the possibility that he really is not sane?

I'll admit that you're closer to the situation than I am but I look at the report that he is mentally incompetent and have to wonder why none of his teachers noticed that he was in trouble. I would have considered teachers the first line of defense for a child like him.
