GateHouse Media official received $135,000 bonus today, second bonus in less than five months

GateHouse Media's quarterly report shows a loss of $526.1 million and steep declines in revenue, but regional manager and former GateHouse Media executive Scott Champion must be doing something right.

Buried close to the end of the report is the news that Champion was awarded a $135,000 bonus today.

On August 6, 2009, a cash bonus in the amount of $135,000 payable to Scott T. Champion, one of our named executive officers, was declared. It is anticipated that such bonus, which is intended to compensate Mr. Champion for personal income tax liabilities incurred by him resulting from the vesting of certain of his RSG’s, will be paid out in the third quarter of 2009.

Champion also received $50,000 March 12, the same time that GateHouse awarded $75,000 to Polly Grunfeld Sack, senior vice president, secretary, and general counsel; $70,000 to Mark Maring, treasurer and vice president of investor relations and strategic development and $50,000 apiece to Michael R. Reed, CEO; Gene Hall, executive vice president; and Kirk Davis, president and chief operating officer. The company has awarded $480,000 in bonuses this year.

Wow, you get a bonus when the company you help run loses millions. What kind of bonsues do these guys and gals receive when the company is in the black?

As Mel Brooks' says, "its good to be the King."
