KC Star offers buyouts to everyone

Hard times continue for McClatchy Newspapers, owner of the Kansas City Star.

In an article in Tuesday's Star, it was reported all McClatchy employees are being required to take one-week unpaid furloughs, while nearly everyone is being offered a buyout:

Besides the furlough, the newspaper will also offer voluntary buyouts to most of its regular full-time workers, (Star Publisher Mark) Zieman told employees in a memo. He said no target had been set, “but we expect it to be considerably less than the last round of involuntary cuts.”

Zieman also said that The Star’s parent company, McClatchy Co., based in Sacramento, Calif., is extending the current wage freeze for all employees through December.
