Douglas: Business community loves Bruce Speck

Standing steadfast against the vast conspiracy to remove Bruce Speck as president of Missouri Southern State University, former Board of Governors President Dwight Douglas, the man who gift-wrapped Speck and delivered him to Joplin, told the Joplin Globe that the business community is rallying to support Speck in his time of need:

The immediate past president of the Board of Governors, Dwight Douglas, said Friday that he had received about 30 signatures on a petition showing support for Speck and the university.

Douglas said the petition originated among a group of Joplin “business leaders,” but he would not identify them.

“I’ve not been out obtaining signatures,” he said. “Some business leaders obtained signatures and said here’s some petitions to provide to the board. The bottom line is there’s just a lot of support in this community for Dr. Speck.”

Douglas also said he has received several phone calls expressing support for Speck, and that he asked the callers to personally write letters for the board to review at the next meeting.

Snake oil runs deep.

This is the same strategy he and Hoppe used at APSU. Divide the faculty from the community and brand them as ivy tower eggheads that need a stern master to force them to do their jobs.
It worked for six years at the Peay, until reality came crashing in. Unless you can explain your position to the community in concrete terms and get their support you are doomed to the same fate.

Had the business and arts communities known that Douglas was railroading Leon out of the MSSU presidency, there would have been hundreds of letters of support for Julio and Vivian. To Leon's credit, he took the high road and kept the ouster to himself, rather than dragging MSSU through the mud. Leon always thought of MSSU first, even though he possibly could have saved his job two years ago.

Has Douglas presented this petition anywhere, or is this just a matter of him saying he has a petition. And tell me, aren't there a lot more than 30 businesspeople in Joplin and the surrounding area? Where are their signatures? Could it be that not everyone supports Rich Tenor Voice?

That is fantastic, 30 signatures. The Joplin Chamber represents over 1,200 businesses. DD is really showing the community support, he's found 30 people who won't disagree with him. In reality, a vote of no confidence in Speck is equally a vote of no confidence in Dwight Douglas.

I seem to remember several Joplin business leaders throwing quite a party to recognize Leon's service to MSSU. I don't recall MSSU ever thanking him for his service.

Yeah, Leon did such a wonderful job - He left the University on the verge of bankruptcy. He lived the high life travelling all over the globe on the university's dime. You guys need to look into the facts here. Julio was not the saint you all have been led to believe he was.

Verge of bankruptcy? Only if you include the silly $3.75 million dollars a year in depreciation. Depreciation is not a cash expense, and therefore should not be used on a balance sheet. Under Leon, the university was showing a net gain of $2.5 million dollars a year.

When they rewrite the history of MSSU someday, it will contain a section on the "dark days" of the university. How an overly ambitious board chairman from Neosho with a Texas-sized ego removed the popular sitting president, installed his own bumbling stooge, and the university soon erupted in chaos and near ruin.

Speck has done well given what he came into. Leon knew that things were about to come crashing down, thats why he didn't fight it.

You must be a non-traditional MSSU student. Otherwise, you would have still been in high school when Julio Leon left the university. Or perhaps you have just done considerable research into the university's recent history.

MSSU Sophomoric would be a better name for MSSU Sophomore. After all, very few people believe in the "Leon's financial crisis" ruse. Ruse because that's exactly what Douglas' and Bruce's deceiving plan is: blame Leon for everything while we do what we want. It's an old political trick: to blame the previous administration for perceived current ills as we attempt to justify the "new" policies.

Sophomoric and Anonymous 3:08: How could Leon have left the university on the verge of bankruptcy when the university cash reserves were 6 million dollars when he left? The confusing mumbo jumbo of the mssu accountants about depreciation was part of the ruse.

Yeah, just like the current circus administration is doing to the one before it. You are right, it is an old political trick to absolve yourself of any responsibility.
