Laurins' attorney asks for separate trials for accused killers of Carthage couple

A motion for separate trials for the two men charged with the Oct. 11 murders of Bob and Ellen Sheldon of Carthage was filed Tuesday in Jasper County Circuit Court.

Christopher Hatley, the public defender representing Matthew Laurins, 19, Springfield, filed the motion. The public defender representing Laurins' co-defendant, Darren Winans, 22, Jasper, Brandi McInroy, filed a motion Wednesday, asking that her client be allowed to wear civilian clothing at his hearings.

Laurins and Winans are charged with two counts of first degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, and one count of burglary.
