Emerson: Obama budget proposal is unsustainable

In her latest newsletter, Eighth District Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson says President Barack Obama's budget proposal will not work:

On Monday, the president unveiled his $3.8 trillion proposal for federal spending in Fiscal Year 2011. This proposal rests on a record-breaking federal deficit for 2011 of $1.56 trillion and is far too much for the American taxpayer to bear. We have to end the irresponsible spending of money the federal government does not have, and we have to start today. This budget leaves the responsibility of saving for future years and puts the weight of incredible deficits on future generations.

In 2009, I opposed all five federal budget proposals, and I refuse to support this budget – it ignores the realities of our country’s economic situation and it defers massive debts to our children. There is nothing responsible about freezing federal spending at all-time record levels. The federal government will have added $3 trillion to the national debt in 2010 and 2011 if this proposal becomes law. We are now borrowing 42 percent of the money the federal government spends each year. It’s unsustainable, and it will end in fiscal disaster.

Acting as a member of the House Committee on Appropriations, I will be fighting to cut spending in our appropriations bills for this year. We have to curb the administration’s desire to rack up new spending records. It is a very serious responsibility for the committee to be a voice of reason, and it is important we are up to the task.

Anonymous at 1:35pm: Because deficits of a trillion and a half "as far as the eye can see" are much more unsustainable that a few hundred million (and going down before the Congress got captured by the Dems in 2006)?

There's a qualitative difference here that you're ignoring. And since when is it a convincing argument to say "My guy's actions are OK because his predecessor did the same bad thing, only less so?"

One other point: since the start of the Cold War the price of liberal support for wars has been outsized social spending, which is a reality Bush had to acknowledge if he wanted to prosecute the GWOT.
