News-Leader parent company gives new president quarter of a million raise

While every employee at Gannett, the parent company of the Springfield News-Leader, has had to take multiple unpaid furlough weeks, the company had no problem giving its new president a quarter of a million raise. New President Gracia Martore also received a ton of stock options as her salary increased to $900,000

It is hard to feel much sympathy for the plight of newspaper companies when their leadership acts in such a cavalier fashion. By all means, cut workers, treat the ones you have remaining shabbily, and reduce your news coverage, but never, ever bring any fiscal sensibility to salaries and benefits for the handful of officials at the top of the chain.
