KOAM dominates May Nielsen ratings

Nielsen ratings for the May sweeps are out and, as usual, KOAM news dominated during all time periods, garnering a larger audience than KOAM and KSNF combined.

The 9 p.m. news of KOAM owner Saga Communications' other station, KFJX, also continued to grow by leaps and bounds, recording 18,000 viewers, more than that of any newscast on KODE or KSNF, according to the ratings.

6 a.m.- 7 p.m.: 1. KOAM 13,000, 2. KODE 5,000  3. KSNF 4,000

Noon- 1. KOAM 16,000, 2. KSNF 3,000

5 p.m.- 1. KOAM 23,000, 2. KODE 10,000, 3. KSNF 8,000

6 p.m.- 1. KOAM 31,000, 2. KODE 12,000, 2. (tie) KSNF 12,000

9 p.m.- KFJX 18,000

10 p.m.- KOAM 35,000, 2. KSNF 13,000, 3. KODE 12,000

Not surprising. KOAM is by far the most professional in feel.

I am surprised Fox is doing that well at the 9 p.m. slot. 18,000 is nothing to sneeze at.

Good point from Anonymous. KFJX has to compete with the other three networks 9 - 10 pm Programs, which are always their star performers. To win against those, means viewers either like KFJX or just want to go to bed ealry.

What does Randy think about FOX News at Nine?

I'm a little suprised that there are no more comment on this information. I was told that both KODE and KSNF had promised advertisers a turn around in the viewership of their news in the market. Have they just ignored that their prediction came up dry?

The only way KSNF or KODE will make any kind of impact is if they beat KOAM to HD News. KJRH made huge increases in Tulsa by going HD, and this was made even harder by the Jay Leno Show in the fall. Even with a crappy lead in, they made big ratings increases when they went to a HD newscast moving from a distant third to second, behind KOTV.

It's actually surprising Nexstar didn't go HD when they built their new studios. But, it's Nexstar.

The HighDef News ideais probably pretty good, but if someone were going to do it, the first step would be all programming. If you can't record your syndicated shows and play them in High Def, then you are a long ways from HD News. Once you do record and playback syndication in High Def, you are a short step away from HD News.

I guess we see who's winning that race. I think Nexstar will try some grand standing like adding an irrelevany News at 4pm or extending one of there already failing half hours into an hour. If a half pound of beef stinks, a full pound from the same cut doesn't smell better.
