Doctors making House calls for Bill White

The battle between doctors and lawyers continues in the 129th District state representative race.

The eight-day-befor-election report filed today by Bill White, shows he has received $6,090 in July, with at least $5,200 of that coming from doctors or doctors' spouses, according to Missouri Ethics Commission records.

The largest contributions, $2,000 apiece, came from Dr. Stephen Slawson and Michelle Slawson.

White's biggest expenditure was slightly over $31,000 to Phillips-Ward Associates, Joplin, for advertising. He spent $36,504.83 during the first part of July, and had $9,567.42 in the bank, according to the report.

While White's money has been almost exclusively from doctors, the contributions of his Republican primary opponent, Shelley Dreyer, have come almost entirely from lawyers, according to Ethics Commission documents.

The difference is that "White's doctors" are from the Joplin community while "Dreyer's trial attorneys" are from KC, St. Louis, and Springfield, not to mention the $55,000 from a trial attorney's PAC.

I am not surprised that Ms. Dreyer's colleagues support her but Bill White is a lawyer too but no lawyers are supporting him. If his own colleagues do not have confidence in him, how can we?

If I counted correctly on the Missouri Ethics reports, White has 3 local lawyers supporting him, and Dreyer has 5 local lawyers supporting her (including Hershewe, the man she works for). Not much difference there.

A closer look would seem to indicate a significant story is being over looked here. Of Dreyer's total income as of July 25, 88% ($114,746) has come from attorneys. Of White's total only 34% ($27,590) has come from people in Medical related professions. Dreyer's local contributions amount to only 35% ($45,183) of her total. If you take away her own donations and Hershewe's ($33,000)from that total, it only amounts to about $12,000 or 12% of her total. White, on the other hand, has raised 98.5% of his funds locally. Why isn't the local media talking about this news?
