Chart editor-in-chief Brennan Stebbins won first place in breaking news reporting and editorial writing at the annual Society of Professional Journalists Region 7 Spring Conference held April 9 in Overland Park, Kan.
Stebbins won in the breaking news category for his coverage of Missouri Southern’s hiring of a convicted embezzler to teach accounting. The editorial writing win was for a series of three Chart editorials.
“It’s nice to be personally recognized, but this is just evidence of the good journalism that is being practiced at Missouri Southern,” Stebbins said. “The Chart has historically done well in the Mark of Excellence Awards, and I am sure that will continue.”
Stebbins, along with the other regional winners, will advance to national judging. Those winners will be announced in early May and presented at the SPJ’s national conference Sept. 25-26 in New Orleans. Stebbins was a national finalist in editorial writing last year.
“The national competition will be tough,” Stebbins said. “It is gratifying just to be recognized.
“Last year’s award was a pretty big surprise.”
Stebbins bested students from Iowa State University and Kansas State University.
The SPJ’s Region 7 consists of colleges and universities in Missouri, Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska.
