Daily Beast story examines Joplin tornado devastation

I had the opportunity Tuesday to accompany Daily Beast/Newsweek reporter Terry Greene Sterling through a portion of our tornado-ravaged city. Her story can be found at this link.

During a three-hour period, we walked through Duquesne and visited East Middle School and talked with people removing what was left of their belongings from the apartment complex behind the 15th Street Wal-Mart:

But we did meet Terri Bass, the sister of Chris Lucas, a 27-year-old former Navy submariner and father of four who lived in this same complex and worked as manager of a nearby Pizza Hut.
When the storm hit, Lucas herded his employees into a sturdy cooler. Then he and another manager huddled into a more flimsy cooler, Bass told us.

Lucas was sucked into the storm. Rescue workers recovered his body several hundred yards from the cooler.

He died a hero, his sister said, risking his life for others. “He was a really good brother,” Bass said.

Randy, thank you for your persistent coverage.

I have searched but have yet to read anywhere a description of the perimeter of the actual area in Joplin that was hit by the tornado.

There have been hints in articles e.g. buildings in the North Main St area apparently still intact etc.

Could you post some info or a link?

I just found an AP map on the SN-L homepage that generally shows the approximate path of the tornado through the city.

It appears that a large portion of the Main Street area and the north area of Rangeline were missed.
