News-Leader features Howard family, killed in Sunday's tornado

In one evening, Edie Howard of Cherryvale, Kan., lost her husband and two children. The horror of the Joplin tornado and how it tore apart that family is chronicled in Didi Tang's article in this morning's Springfield News-Leader:

"(Edie) is experiencing heart-wrenching feelings that no human being should ever have to go through," said the Rev. J. Friedel of St. Peter the Apostle Church in Joplin, who will officiate at the memorial service for the Howards on Monday.

"Imagine you lost your entire family: your husband and your children, who were most precious to you," Friedel said. "At one fell swoop, the entire world changed for her. She is asking, why I wasn't with them?"

Friedel said the family were notified of the deaths of Rusty Howard and the children on Wednesday. Their bodies were released to the family Thursday afternoon.
