T. R. Hanrahan receives Teacher of the Year award

Soon to be unemployed newspaper adviser and journalism instructor T. R. Hanrahan was named Teacher of the Year by the Missouri Southern State University Communications Department during the senior recognition ceremony today.

Hanrahan, whose students were the only Joplin area reporters to consistently provide information on misdeeds and missteps by the administration of University President Bruce Speck, was given the heave-ho recently despite a record that includes being named Adviser of the Year by the Missouri College Media Association and having the Chart and its reporters receive regional and national honors.

by the Missouri Southern State University "communication department"

I'm really impressed at this "statement" they are making....that's like your mother saying something good about you....Oh...geez...

Anon 4:01:
The award is voted on by STUDENTS in the department. Graduating STUDENTS.
Isn't it all about the STUDENTS?

Will someone tell me what the future is for students with communication degrees? Is it, hopefully, the NBA, NFL, MLB or MODEPTofCORR?

I do not know Hanrahan and frequently disagree with the Chart's editorials. However, this is the future of MSSU. The "direction" of the U is to become a service hub and transition from a Liberal Arts institution. Soon, MSSU will train cops, dental assistants, and nurses exclusively. This will return MSSU to its community college roots.

Hanrahan teaches journalism, and judging by the voice of his students, as well as the negative attention he receives from the administration, he is a highly effective instructor. MSSU loses; the students lose. Good luck, TR, although you will stand on YOUR positive accomplishments.

So if the faculty think he's great, we shouldn't listen to them. If the students say he's great, we should ignore them too.

Who should we listen to? Speck? The person who has the LEAST amount of actual professional contact with the man?

how about his peers all over the campus doing the voting...few people know a person better than those who have to work in a business or organization..is he the best teacher on campus..it's obvious the students and maybe the teachers in his own department voted for him as a vote against the school...not a good reason...if true that's not an honest reason..how would those future journalist feel if this was someone else voting for this reason. Sorry, but it loses credibility under the circumstance.

His peers across campus DID do some voting. The faculty senate recognized him on the very same day.
Students have been very vocal in their support online. It is interesting to see former students (including some in the armed forces) giving testimony that he changed their lives or kept them in school.
As a student, I see this as support for a guy who got treated poorly.
