Texas student returns to tornado-ravaged Joplin, but she isn't coming emptyhanded

Amanda Jones was one of the sweetest and hardest working students to ever sit in my classroom at South Middle School.

After Amanda finished middle school, she packed her bags and headed to Victoria, Texas. On Friday, Amanda will return to her hometown, as it recovers from the vicious tornado that ripped through its heart Sunday and she will be bringing with her the love and support of the Victoria High School Warriors and more.

"You wouldn't believe how much my school donated," Amanda said. "Kids who don't even know me have donated clothes, food, water." The gifts did not just come from the teachers, Amanda said, noting that teachers and other staff had also contributed to the cause.

"These are really amazing people. They have all been wonderful and wanted to help everyone in Joplin.

When Amanda arrives, she will have at least $100 in cash donations with more expected before she leaves Victoria. Also, five large bags of clothes, 10 cases of 24-count water bottles, plus food products and toiletries.

It's not just the Victoria Warriors who are giving to the people of Joplin. The folks who work with her dad at the KB3MI Oilfield Company are also sending items.

It's not surprising to see Amanda Jones take the lead on something like this. She was always volunteering and going the extra mile to help everyone at South. Though it has taken a tragedy to bring Amanda back to Joplin, her presence will bring some much needed sunshine to this city.
