Cape Girardeau teachers told not to go online with students

Administrators in the Cape Girardeau School District have warned their teachers not to go online with students following the signing into law of Sen. Jane Cunningham's Amy Hestir Student Protection Act:

New teachers in the Cape Girardeau School District were told immediately Thursday during orientation not to connect with students online.

"As far as a teacher goes, I've never been a proponent of that. I don't think teachers should have that kind of relationship with students," said assistant superintendent Sherry Copeland.

Copeland said the Cape Girardeau district will soon have an updated policy on electronic communication in place because of the law.

Copeland said although she realizes the law was put in place to protect students, as an administrator she also looks at the teacher's side of things. Online communication, she said, can put a teacher in jeopardy and more prone to accusations.

The teachers my kids are friends with are family friends and they have known them their entire life and, they were friends with them on facebook before they ever had them as teachers! Now, because they're teachers the can't be "friends"? Please! A real parent knows what their children are doing. We have all user names and passwords for our kids emails and social networking sites. Access to those sites as well as email and cell phone use is a privilage and if it gets abused they're all taken away!
