The cover for our new book- 5:41: Stories from the Joplin Tornado

The publication date for the book Carthage Press Managing Editor John Hacker and I have been working on this summer, 5:41, subtitled Stories from the Joplin Tornado, is rapidly approaching.

The book's cover, except for the barcode, accompanies this post.

For more information about the book, check out this earlier Turner Report post.

The book includes stories John and I have written about the Joplin Tornado, as well as stories contributed by others, the obituaries of those who died in the tornado, the complete text of the Joplin Tornado Memorial Service, the official report of the National Weather Service, and dozens of photos, most of them taken by John Hacker.

The cover and book design were provided by Nina English.

If all goes according to plan, orders for the book can be placed in about two weeks. I will provide updates on The Turner Report.

Can we preorder a copy?

Yes, but not for a few days. Once our publishing company reviews the book (and that process is almost complete), and then we proofread it for the final time, a web page will go online almost immediately through which it can be ordered. Shortly after that it will be available through Amazon.com and after that, through online outlets such as Barnes & Noble and Books-A-Million. It will probably be mid to late September before we have the first Joplin signing for the book. After that, it will be available locally at several locations.

How much of the proceeds go to helping Joplin?

Anonymous said...

I think the count is now 160 lives.

It is 160. It was not at the time the book was written.

100% of the proceeds will go to help Randy Turner and John Hacker.

At the risk of cutting sales for this book, it is obvious that I have some anonymous jerks who comment on this blog.

As Joplin Tornado Info has already reported (from information noted on my Facebook page), a portion of the proceeds will go to a project I am working on at East Middle School that is tornado-related. I will provide more information about that in the next few weeks as soon as I have everything confirmed.

To anticipate another question, I do not plan to tell anyone what percentage will be going toward this project. At this point, I don't know.

Anyone who has known me (and most of the people on this blog who make negative comments on a regular basis don't) knows that I have always been willing to put my own money into projects to help my students.

As for the portion that doesn't go into the school project, I can guarantee that a lot of that money will be going right back into the Joplin economy, which is something that cannot be said about some other Joplin Tornado projects.

Really? Let us know which ones are scams.

You are putting words in my mouth. I never said anything about scams.

Hey, Anonymous, get off your butt and you go spend a few months assembling a book and getting a publisher and distribution for it, too. After you're done, let us know if you feel you should be able to SELL the fruit of your labor and make some money off it.

And I bet poor, bitter old Anonymous claims to believe in capitalism and the old American Way,too. Just not for Randy Turner.

Griping Anonymous, you are really the poster child for Americans who reserve a particular hate for people who read and write.
