The Missouri House passed the fix to Sen. Jane Cunningham's Facebook Bill today by a vote of 139-2. The bill now goes to Gov. Jay Nixon for his signature or a veto.
Nixon asked the legislature to simply repeal the social networking portion of SB 54, which would have been completely prevented teachers from communicating with students through Facebook and other social networking sites, and had been interpreted by many as preventing teachers from being even on Facebook.
The fix, coming after consultation between Sen. Cunningham's staffers and representatives of MNEA and MSTA, requires every school district to have a policy for student-teacher communication in place by March 1, 2012.
My criticism of this "fix" is that it does not actually give the power to schools and teachers to set up policies as supporters are insisting, but instead gives it to the Missouri School Boards Association, which writes policy for many Missouri schools.
