Citizens Advisory Recovery team schedules design workshop in Joplin

(From the City of Joplin)

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Central States Chapter, in conjunction with the Citizens Advisory Recovery Team (CART), will host a community design workshop to visually explore concepts and ideas that have been identified through the recovery planning process. The event will be at Forest Park Baptist Church on October 13 and 14.

Preliminary sketching begins at noon, Thursday October 13. All residents are encouraged to stop by anytime from noon to 6:00 p.m. to participate in conversations and provide input to design exploration and again on Friday starting at 8:00 a.m.

The event continues all day Friday and culminates in a formal “pin-up” at 4:00 p.m. when the sketches of the two days will be displayed. The AIA will staff the event with 50-60 professionals including city planners, architects, landscape architects and designers who will work with community members. The event is estimated to bring nearly $375,000 of professional services to support the community.

“Now it’s time to put pen to paper to visually explore what the rebuilt Joplin area can look like. The event relies heavily on community participation, and we need the guidance and assistance from those that know the region better than anyone: Joplin and Duquesne residents. This workshop’s success depends on participation from every corner of the community and we look forward to seeing lots of people engaged in the design process,” says CART member, Kim Cox.

AIA team members have been conducting interviews with stakeholders, reviewing the work completed by CART and four sector groups, and touring the area. This event marks the next step in the community recovery planning process being implemented for the Joplin Area. CART conducted an extensive community engagement process to find out what people wanted. All those ideas and comments were used to draft a recovery vision, goals and project concepts which were completed last month.
