Young Democrats of Southwest Missouri plan first meeting in Joplin

(From the Young Democrats of Southwest Missouri)

The Young Democrats of Southwest Missouri, a group providing social and political networking opportunities for young progressives and Democrats, will host its first meeting on Sunday, February 12th at 5:30pm. The event will be held at Gusano's Pizza located at 3929 E 7th St, Suite E in Joplin.

The first meeting will be social and informal. James Owen, president of Democrats for the Ozarks in Springfield, will be on hand to discuss the starting of a local group dedicated to encouraging participation among Democrats between the ages of 20-39. The group will be discussing its organizational structure and goals for the future, along with making decisions about possible direction. Expected ideas for the group include presenting volunteer opportunities, social events, community involvement and providing a forum for candidates and activists to meet with our next generation of Democrats.

"This is a great opportunity to get people involved who often feel overwhelmed with the political process and have a limited amount of time to participate. This group offers networking with like-minded individuals in a fun and informative atmosphere" said Jordan Overstreet, one of the group's organizers. Similar groups have popped up across the state in recent years in the cities of Springfield, Columbia, Kansas City, and St Louis. "I think the show of enthusiasm from Democrats in the area for this group is very encouraging. This is a great way to stay informed and meet new people" commented Owen.
