McCaskill: I will vote in favor of the Buffett Rule

Sen. Claire McCaskill sent the following message this morning, asking those who support the Buffett Rule to sign on as citizen co-sponsors.

At some point in your life you've probably heard, "life's not fair."

While there may be some truth to that saying, I believe we should do everything in our power to prove it wrong. And, that's why I'm voting in favor of the Buffett Rule on Monday.

If passed, this rule will make our tax code fairer by closing a loophole that allows multi-millionaires and billionaires to pay a lower portion of their income in taxes than many middle-class families.

This isn't about attacking the wealthy -- no one should be penalized for their success -- it's simply about tweaking our system so that it's fair for all Americans.

Unfortunately, some Republicans are trying to block this common sense rule. That's why I need as many supporters as possible to step up as citizen co-sponsors of the Buffett Rule before the vote.

Please sign on as a citizen co-sponsor of the Buffett Rule right now.

I've been fighting hard in the Senate to make our system fair again. Last month, when I introduced legislation that would have ended the enormous tax subsidies given to big oil companies -- the same companies simultaneously charging more at the pump and raking in literally billions in profits every quarter -- it was blocked.

The Buffett Rule is our next chance to even the playing field. Thanks in part to thousands of your fellow Americans who helped build public support for this measure by petitioning the budget super committee last fall, this bill will come to a vote in Congress.

Despite their hesitancy to ever cut taxes, even Republicans can't ignore a groundswell of support from real Americans. And if they do, the more citizen co-sponsors we have on our side, the more clear it will be to voters this fall who's on their side.

Make sure everyone pays their fair share in taxes. Sign on as a citizen co-sponsor of the Buffett Rule in the Senate.

Continuing to give certain Americans tax giveaways while the middle class is struggling is unfair, and it's no way to solve our debt problem.

Thank you for standing with me to fix it,
