Jasper County Sheriff's race: Is he an Archie or a Jughead?

You couldn't blame Eastern District Commissioner Jim Honey for staring daggers at Jasper County Sheriff Archie Dunn as he spoke at the Lincoln Ladies Ice Cream Social Monday night at Memorial Hall in Carthage.

Honey appeared to be wondering whether this was Archie or Jughead speaking.

Dunn quickly let it be known that he was tossing out Ronald Reagan's famous 11th Commandment. He was speaking ill of his fellow Republicans, not his opponents Larry Newman and Randee Kaiser, but the Jasper County Commission,  stoking the long-running feud that has entertained and irritated county residents for the past few years.

Dunn was also the candidate to ignore the three-minute time limitation and the warnings from the timekeeper and quite possibly set a record for using the personal pronoun as he recounted the things the had done since he became sheriff nine years ago.

In his speech, former deputy Larry Newman said it was time to get past someone whose only qualification was being a law enforcement officer alll of his life. Newman noted that he had successfully run a business.

The final speaker, Carthage Assistant Police Chief Randee Kaiser, did not mention Dunn by name but said it was time to have a sheriff who can "manage a budget, get along with others," and Kaiser also noted he would use diplomacy and actually get along with people.

All three speeches are included in the accompanying video.
