Death, Destruction Hit Joplin, Missouri

The accompanying podcast features a reading of the first Huffington Post article I wrote after the May 22, 2011, Joplin Tornado.

I wrote this on my IPhone, sitting in my car in the parking lot at the apartment complex where I live. I had the phone plugged into the charger in my car since we still had no electricity at that point.

We still had no idea since this was just 14 hours after the tornado how many lives had been lost or just how bad the damage was. I mention in this that at least 89 people had been killed. The death toll eventually was listed at 161.

This blog was later included as a chapter in our book 5:41: Stories from the Joplin Tornado.
