Departure of 100 teachers not worthy of Joplin Board of Education's attention

More than 100 teachers who were staffing the classrooms in the Joplin R-8 School District during the 2012-2013 school year, approximately one out of every six, will not be there when school starts Thursday, August 15, but that problem has yet to be mentioned in the public meetings of the R-8 Board of Education.

Most of those who have left in the district, whether it was of their own accord, or with a good, hard shove from administration are being replaced by teachers who are in the classroom for the first time.

As has been noted numerous time on this blog, more than 20 teachers have left Joplin High School, including at least eight math teachers, while McKinley Elementary will almost an entirely new faculty, with reportedly only two or three remaining from last year.

This does not include the significant numbers of teachers who have been moved from positions they have held for years to unfamiliar positions, usually a first step to convince teachers it is time for them to leave the district.

Apparently, the Joplin R-8 bloodbath will continue following the 2013-2014 school year, and it won't be mentioned either at the board of education meetings or in the pages of the Joplin Globe.

When you don't fit their agenda or 'belong' to the 'in' group, you are a goner. Either get out of your own accord or go to whatever corner they decide to put you into and sit quietly. Do not disagree, do not comment. If you do, you will regret it. Wouldn't you like to know exactly how many teachers quit and how long they had taught in the district and over all?

It was the plan of the current upper administration to "phase out" teachers who were not up to their standards. No one expected them to be anything but relieved to get rid of teachers and building administrators who might not see things as they do. There is no room for reality in an organization whose motto is "dream big." Real world people will never feel comfortable under those circumstances.

That the Joplin School Board has NEVER ONCE openly acknowledged the issue tells us that they are complicit as well as complacent. I wonder what else they've given a tacit nod to? Time will tell.

11:12--

Your writing is hardly a good reflection upon the teaching ability of your vaunted childhood educators. I'd say the apple didn't fall too far from the tree.

Now, now. 11:12 may have a point. Perhaps modern educators and teachers really haven't had a rigorous enough education. I would propose a book study. Perhaps something real-world like Crime and Punishment. They could then look for relevant applications to their lives and the world around them. It's been a thought provoking work and inspiration for generations now.
