Columbia school board limiting collective bargaining discussion to board members

Someone should get a dictionary and show the Columbia Board of Education the meaning of "collective bargaining."

The school district is entering its second year of collective bargaining after teachers voted to be represented by their MNEA chapter and board members want to improve the process, so during tonight's meeting they will discuss how to do so- without any input from teachers.

That should really improve the process.

From the CMNEA perspective, McClintic said the group also would like to see a more "collaborative approach" to negotiations. Last year, she said, the district "set up parameters for bargaining based on what an attorney recommended." CMNEA had hoped its members would be part of the process of setting up those parameters.
"We were hoping that we could all work together because we believe that's what collective bargaining is about — working together," she said.
Tomorrow night's meeting, she said, is "kind of an interesting example" of a lack of collaboration. From her understanding, she said CMNEA won't be part of the discussion. "It's a discussion … with the seven of them," referring to the board members.
The school board will not vote on anything related to collective bargaining tomorrow night. King said she thinks it's good for the board just to have a conversation about the issue.
"I just think it will be good for the public to hear us talking about it," she said.
