Hearings on Normandy School District to be held tonight

Efforts by the Normandy School District to regain accreditation and the district's unwillingness or inability to go along with a new state law which requires it to foot the bill for students transferring to other districts will be among the topics accressed at a State Board of Education hearing tonight.

The Normandy Board of Education recently voted not to pay $1.3 million in tuition bills.

At the heart of the matter is a quick fix system that supposedly offers those in failing schools the opportunity to move somewhere better, while preventing the schools from improving themselves by crippling them financially.

And, of course, the main issue, not the only issue, but the main one, that is affecting performance at these schools- the poverty in the district- remains unaddressed.
