Solution offered for Joplin R-8 financial problems: We're selling education

Now we know how the Joplin R-8 Administration plans to build its rapidly dwindling reserves.

You would think the plan might involve cutting spending- maybe stop hiring more $50,000+ plus officials to staff the adminstration office at 32nd and Duquesne, or perhaps eliminating the travel by administrators and the various teaching and learning coaches (the junior administrators in waiting) to various seminars in Washington, D. C., Colorado, Florida, Texas, or anywhere else that might be offering an opportunity for a getaway.

If you thought that, you would be wrong.

By a 7-0 vote (of course) a few moments ago, the Joplin R-8 Board of Education gave the go-ahead for a plan to start monetizing everything from the website, to the naming of classrooms and buildings.

The proposal, which was conceived by the district's director of community development Kim Vann and presented by board member Dawn Sticklen, began with a note that other people are making money off Joplin Schools, such as those who publish sports schedules and calendars, so why should the school not get in on the action?

As possible fundraising ideas, Ms. Sticklen mentioned the naming of the new facilities that are being built across the district and even classrooms in those buildings as well as sports fields.

Advertising could even be placed on the parking lot flags, she added.

Naturally, Ms. Sticklen said, rules would have to be implemented in the sale of such advertising that would "protect the integrity of education."

At a time when "filling the fund gap" is becoming more and more important for the school district, she said, these ideas could bring in much needed revenue.

Another source of income, the district website, could also bring in some cash, Ms. Sticklen said, noting that the site has 250,000 visitors a month. "This is traffic we can monetize."

Board President Jeff Flowers said there is "a lot of interest in the business community" in this kind of advertising.

Ms. Sticklen said the advertising would be more beneficial for the businesses than giving donations.

The board has to come up with some money somewhere since it recently approved a "strategic plan" that calls for reserves to drop from their already dangerously low 14 percent to 8 to 10 percent by next year. The plan also includes, without saying how it would be accomplished, that the reserves will go back up to 25 percent (the recommended level) by 2015.

The district is selling to the highest bidder? Prostituting itself? Creating obligations to its advertisers? This is the most stupid thing I've ever heard of. I only wish I was surprised. It'll be like the Church of old--buying off staff with donations and advertising instead of buying absolution for sins.

Sheer stupidity. Be easier to live within their means like they expect their staff to do. Meager living, at that.

Great ideas!

Something about selling off a brand new building to the highest bidder for the sake of commercializations and/ or notoriety seems wrong to me.

We'll, I hear the new focus is not the basics of education but some career pathway thing... Prostitution IS one of the oldest professions.

Has it really come down to this? Selling the classrooms off? Why not just practice some fiscal restraint? I'm guessing those classrooms can't get paid for any other way. Too much money wasted and no one at MODOT is responsible enough to say so.

I've got an idea. The new buildings can be sold and then leased back. Just like a payday loan.

tabaskiThis will work with the City also. You can rename your streets for a price. Imagine, Google Avenue, Amazon Street and Buick Place. You can place ad placards on the Police Cars and Fire Trucks and the City Council can all wear company logo sweatshirts to Council Meetings.

Financial numbers are one thing, graduation numbers are another, however, the main indicator of every thing that DR B is having this district do is supposed to raise the MSIP/MAP test scores, and Joplin, well, it ranks, out of 12 area school districts, last or in the bottom 3 in each MAP category. Here are the AYP Numbers, these are things that they hide:
Rank School District APR Score
1st Nixa 97.9
2nd Bolivar 97.1
.......
9th Webb City 87.5
10th Nevada 85.4
11th Carthage 85
12th Joplin 78.6

Here are some other numbers:
In the 3 year comparison from 2011-2013 for the MSIP 5 MAP Index Scores for English LA 3-8, Math 3-8
Joplin ranking out of 12 schools is last 2 years and next to last 1 year.
The 2013 MSIP 5/MAP Index Scores for 2012-2013 Joplin is tied with another area school for last out of 12.
Numbers speak for themselves. If teachers are not happy, kids are not happy. Kids not happy, parents not happy. Overall, non happy people will always equal low test scores, right?
Look at the scores when Dr. Jim Simpson was in the district. The board and its' upper administration is corrupt, voters and patrons of the district have to put a stop to it. Regardless if you like or dislike Randy Turner, the numbers that are presented do not lie.
