Height of hypocrisy? StudentsFirst celebrates National Teacher Day

Michelle Rhee's StudentsFirst group is pushing the elimination of teacher tenure, evaluating teachers on the basis of student standardized test scores, educational vouchers, and inevitably, the destruction of the public school system. Oh, and the organization is a supporter of the Teach for America concept of young, low-paid idealistic teachers coming in and replacing veterans. So naturally, the organization praises teachers in the accompanying video, This would seem to be the height of hypocrisy.

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! I know that I don't feel appreciated. Missouri teachers and friends and families of teachers, you need to take a stand in November. I teach in an impoverished school district, but if this bill passes, I will be leaving for a more affluent district or a different state!

There is a vast amount of money being contributed towards ruining public education. It is sad to see so many people blindly supporting these policies simply because the big money mouthpieces are doing there best to degrade teachers and fool everyone into thinking that there is a rash of terrible teachers that can't be fired because tenure exists. The only thing ruining public education are these groups of people that want to privatize schools and earn massive profits from education in the form of for-profit charter schools and standardized testing. If you do not teach, think about how you would feel if it was your profession begin attacked by outsiders that know very little about what goes on in your workplace day to day. I don't see people collecting names on surveys outside of Sam's to try to destroy firefighter benefits or to ensure that all stock brokers lose their 401k's. I strongly encourage everyone to read the article entitled "The Myth of Charter Schools" by Diane Ravitch. It can be found on the nybooks.com website or you can Google it.
