On May 6th, the Missouri House of Representatives successfully overrode Governor Nixon’s veto of Senate Bill 509. This bill will help Missouri citizens and businesses alike by providing broad-based tax relief and spurring economic growth.
Over the past year, House leadership worked to unify Republicans around tax cut legislation. Members were encouraged to voice concerns early so every effort could be made to address them. This group effort greatly contributed to the success of Senate Bill 509, which offers Missourians the first income tax cut in 93 years.
“I am thrilled we were able to override the Governor’s veto Senate Bill 509,” said Hoskins. “The lack of growth in Missouri’s economy clearly showed we needed to make a change to create growth and prevent existing companies and hardworking citizens from fleeing to states with lower tax burdens. Republicans showed unity against the Governor, persevered to bring tax relief to the state, and enact this historic tax cut.”
The House overrode Governor Nixon’s veto by a vote of 109 to 46. The first tax cut from Senate Bill 509 will go into effect in 2017 assuming General Revenue increases by $150 million.
