Joplin High School teacher on sex charges: I didn't do it

Former Joplin High School communication arts teacher Jessica Low waived her formal arraignment pleaded not guilty today in Jasper County Circuit Court to felony charges of statutory rape, statutory sodomy, and furnishing pornography to minors.

Low, 32, was arrested shortly after the school day ended May 29 at the 9-10 Center (the former Memorial Middle Schooi), where she taught the last two years.

The probable cause statement alleges she had sex with a 16-year-old boy at his home ontwo occasions and sent nude photos of herself participating in a solo sex act to that boy and another 16-year-old boy.

Low's preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. July 3 in Judge Richard Copeland's court.

Could she not spare those boys and their families a trial? Really? She did, after all, document the deed herself. Homemade evidence, as it were. Shameful.

In this case as well as some of the others, like the Njoroge, I also feel very bad for the family at home. In each case the suspect has small children, a husband, not to mention extended family of parents, grandparents, siblings, cousins. I always think how humiliating and sad it must be for them, but especially for the husband and children. Breaks up a family.

I would be real surprised if she isn't guilty given that they arrested her. It is a waste of time and money if they don't have a case. The statements and reports all refer to pictures and texts. If she's guilty and can't own up to it, it kind of shows how far gone she really is as far as immaturity. The day of reckoning will come, it seems kind of pointless to try and put it off although I understand she has motivation to deny and her family will have motivation to believe her. If there's something we don't know and she's innocent, more power to her, but circumstantially I would be surprised.

This next statement may be controversial, but even though I think she's wrong and that there is a serious ethical violation due to her professional obligations, I don't necessarily think she should be treated as a "sex offender" in the same way that tech guy at Joplin should be. It's not that I think 16 is emotionally mature, but I don't exactly think it's a kid, either. The English-speaking developed countries that are most similar to us, Canada, England, and Australia all have 16 as the age of consent. In fact, some of those countries are more strict in terms of pornography laws so it's not like they are just loose or more permissive. I feel like Low will be paying the price professionally and personally, she shouldn't be a teacher, but that being considered a sex offender the rest of her life doesn't feel right to me.

This is just a thought and I would be interested in other people's ideas or if I am off base or if I'm overlooking something.

I was a mother at 16, so having sex at that age is not uncommon. However, She is a grown woman having sex with a minor child. She is married and
has children. Its not like she was 20 and he 16. She is mentally unstable. Who in their right mind, let alone a mother, has sex or sends solo sex acts to a chid. Furthermore, she is a teacher. In a professional position. It is illigal for a teacher to engage in sexual activities with a student, regardless of age.

If the sex roles were revirsed, she a male, him a female, there would be no discussion. She is 100% a sex offender. If it was my son, she'd be lucky to be alive.

You hear other say, but the boys encouraged it. Really?? She is in her 30's having sex with children. It is no differnt than a man doing what she accused of.

We live in United States where it is illigal. You cannot consent to sex as a minor. She should not only go to jail but never teach again.

I do feel so sorry and embarrassed for her husband, children and family. My prayers go them. It deeply saddens me to know that her children will not have a mother.

According to CaseNet her next hearing isn't a prelim, it's a pretrial conference set for 7/3 at 10:00 am.

She is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court or she pleads guilty.

That said, this post says "Joplin High School teacher on sex charges: I didn't do it." If she actually said "I didn't do it" the the post is accurate. If all she did was plead not guilty then it is unfair and incorrect to put the words in her mouth that she said "I didn't do it."

I Agree with 12:06. This blog is especially good at putting words in people's mouths, quoting inaccurate news sources, and apparently using others research instead of doing their own.
Seems like the teaching skills of R8 extend furge back than the Huff administration

I was one of her students, and she was my favorite teacher. I hope, for the sake of her family and students, that this isnt true.

I was one of her 7th hour students. She was a really good teacher. When my mother passed away she helped me a lot. She met my cousin which I was living with after my mother passed, my cousin said, "I don't think she's that kind of person, I honestly don't think she did it." I have my own opinion which is basically the same thing. Yes, she is a good person, I truly believe that she wouldn't do anything like this. She was the ONLY teacher that would help me with my IEP. She may not have been able to do much because she wasn't my IEP Coordinator or whatever you want to call it but like I said the teacher I had for my IEP, he didn't help me that much...Jessica on the other hand, she would pull time from her own schedule to do a 1-on-1 session with me and some of my peers. She never made any "Gestures, looks, etc." She actually did an awesome job, she would put herself onto our levels and let us be the teacher. If we made a mistake on an assignment she would actually hint around that the answer was incorrect, unlike several of the teachers I had, that would just give us the answers. She actually put an effort into her job. She actually cared. And why would someone like her, Nice, Respectful, Caring, do anything to that extreme?!?!But to wrap this up my conclusion is, No, I honestly do not think she did it. She was too good of a person to ever do anything like that!
