Joplin R-8 Board member resigns after transferring daughter to Webb City

Dawn Sticklen, who has enrolled her daughter in the Webb City R-7 School District, has resigned from the Joplin R-8 Board of Education.

From the Joplin Globe report:

In a resignation letter that she planned to submit by today (Friday) to the full board, Sticklen said she is grateful for her time on the board.

"Each and every board member- both past and present- has demonstrated a passion for improving our schools and our community that has inspired me to step out of my personal comfort zone and utilize my talent and time to work for Joplin's children."

Sticklen would not answer any questions about whether her resignation was connected with her daughter's transfer, which was reportedly for athletic reasons.

Sticklen was appointed to the board four years ago and was elected to a full three-year term in 2013.

The board will select a replacement, but first it will ask for letters from interested candidates for the position, then review those letters.

Sticklen is the third member to leave the board in the past four motnhs, following Phil Willcoxon, who did not seek re-election and former Board President Jeff Flowers, who was defeated in his bid for re-election.

But I thought she was helping to build a better school district than anywhere else. You know, the 21st century school and blah blah blah. And with all the' go big or go home' athletic improvements that Joplin has added...what athletic reason could there be?
It would have been refreshing to hear the real reason because her resignation letter sounds stock.

The Board will review letters from interested candidates and then select whomever Huff tells them to select. You know, another ass-kisser who won't stand up to him.

She is no loss. Her daughter should not be eligible to play basketball for a year. Webb City continues to recruit. Someone needs to inquire when she contacted Webb's coach. Jeff Starkweather needs to file a complaint.

Yes, CJ and Anne Sharp, Ms. Sticklen did a fantastic job for you on that finance committee. She seems to have completely turned a blind eye to all that you wanted, and as a result, this district is flat broken and having to borrow funds to cover operating costs.

Real good job there, for sure. I suppose all it takes to cut it with these people is an ability to rubber stamp whatever CJ wants.

Good riddance. She was a rubber stamper and a huge CJ supporter. Leave the school flat broke and scores worse than most others in the area. We have a nice school, well almost, but our kids scores aren't any higher. Where is the accountability? teachers and coaches that have not received raises in many years yet we add more and more positions at the administration building. CJ cut dare officers because we can't afford them? Come on...I support our kids but I sure don't support the corruption of our "leaders". CJ, you want us to support the kids? If we really support them then we should be getting rid of you and your followers who have driven this district into the ground.
