Hartzler: We must not take threat of ISIL lightly

(From Fourth District Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler)

This was a very busy in-district work week as I addressed issues of concern with citizens in various parts of Missouri’s Fourth Congressional District.

An event that generated a lot of attention was a presentation, in Sedalia, on the threat posed by ISIL terrorists. As was the case with a similar presentation last month in Harrisonville, the Sedalia event was well attended by people wanting to learn more about these terrorists and their plans for the Middle East and our homeland. About 150 people came to our presentation at State Fair Community College in Sedalia, as I shared the details of my recent fact-finding trip to Israel, Jordan, Egypt, and Morocco, where I met with heads of state and defense officials from those four countries, listening to their concerns about the ISIL threat.

The number of ISIL fighters is ever-increasing. There are 30,000 known fighters and the number is growing by the week. And this group of terrorists is well-financed as a result of hundreds of millions of dollars in black market oil revenues. In addition, they are involved in kidnapping, extortion, and are now even taking part in the manufacturing and distribution of drugs. As I have said before, this is not a threat to take lightly.

I had the opportunity to answer questions regarding America’s course of action as ISIL acquires new territory in the region and spreads its influence. I pointed out that Congress has given President Obama the authority to train moderate Syrian rebels, improve counter-terrorism programs, and provide humanitarian assistance to the victims of these terrorists – but that approval is only authorized through December 11th. After that date, Congress will have to consider its options regarding authorization of expanded military force for the President. It is my hope that President Obama uses the time between now and then to build a broad coalition and to ensure the support of America’s allies in the region. I look forward to discussing this critical issue when Congress resumes later this fall.
