C. J. Huff: I want to be the next Missouri Commissioner of Education

To those who read the Turner Report, it did not come as a big surprise, but the Joplin Globe posted the revelation about a half hour ago that Joplin R-8 Superintendent C. J. Huff has applied for Commissioner of Education, a position which will open at the beginning of the new year when current Commissioner Chris Nicastro retires.

Peter Herschend, president of the State Board of Education, which will hire the commissioner, held closed door discussions with Huff at the R-8 Administration Building Friday, October 24.

Huff told the Globe, "It would give me an opportunity to serve kids in Joplin, but also across the state of Missouri and try to improve the quality of the system."

The Globe article talks glowingly of Huff's strong points:

Some of those relationship-building skills and goal-oriented experiences were gained in the aftermath of the May 2011 tornado. Huff was instrumental in the school district starting classes on time in the fall of 2011, just three months after the tornado damaged or destroyed nearly a dozen schools and district buildings. Over the course of the past year, the district has opened two new elementary schools, one middle school, one high school, and one technical center, marking the end of its rebuilding phase just 39 months after the tornado.

In fact, the Globe story praises Huff so much, it wouldn't be at all surprising if it originated with the Joplin R-8 public relations team, especially since there is no Globe byline on the article.

A note at the bottom mentions that information from the Associated Press was included in the report. That would be the mention of Nicastro's retirement and the controversy surrounding her tenure in Missouri's top education post.

There are no mentions of any controversies during C. J. Huff's time in Joplin.

Of course, the same result could have been reached by either using a district press release or by searching through the Globe archives.

Wow. I posted a comment to the post mentioning the closed-door meeting. I said Huff as Commissioner of Ed would never happen. I was wrong. I'm shocked. I thought Lankford was a shoe-on, and maybe Huff would take Lankford's spot. Huff as Commissioner? Is he qualified? Insane.

Shhhh!!!! Don't anyone jinx this. If asked, CJ is the best thing ever. He would be perfect for any job in Jeff City.

Although I would be glad to see him gone, I would remind people what happened to MSSU when another institution gave Bruce Speck a good review so he would get-gone. Huff needs to stay here and face the music with the audit (please please please auditors--do a real job on the R-8 investigation) and face the (hopefully) angry voters next time he tries to pass a bond issue.

i'd rather see him go to prison where he belongs, along with his posse. But politics makes for strange bedfellows, so it isn't surprising to see him headed to JC to join his pal Nixon.

I don't know where you got the idea he is buddies with Nixon. He will suck on anyone to get where he wants to go, he crawled under Biden's desk for Pete's sake, but he is openly Republican.

His becoming state commissioner would be like Hitler continuing his march on from Germany.

If you haven't noticed his ties to Nixon, then you aren't paying close enough attention. Which explains why all you can do is make a comment that is incredibly crude.

If you haven't heard him speak out one million and twelve time that he is a staunch Republican, then you are the one who is deaf, dumb and blind.
Crude is the building thrown together at twentieth and Indiana, crude is so-called education being taught at the Joplin R8, crude is tone CJ uses when he refers to the teachers, parents and citizens of Joplin .... My comment was merely a fact.
